Bantam’s last long-form project was a partnership in the design, construction and operation of Supersmith, a 7,000 sf shared workshop built inside a former plumbing warehouse in the waterfront Brooklyn community of Red Hook. Since its establishment in 2013, the space has housed dozens of furniture makers, metal workers, ceramicists, product designers and artists, and its facilities include shared wood-working equipment, metal and ceramic and photography studos, retail and event spaces and a barber shop. In addition to providing workspace, tools and opportunities for its residents, Supersmith was expanded over its first five years into a neighborhood resource for classes, workshops, community partnerships and events, and continues to grow as a vital part of the Red Hook neighborhood today.
